About the Event

The walk

Strolling through the by-ways of the Home of Saint Patrick exploring a landscape of ancient monuments and saintly connections. We begin by paying a visiting to the site of the first church founded by Saint Patrick. It was a place close to his heart and in his later years he returned spending his final days in the area.

Leaving from here the walk connects to the Lecale Way above Lough Money. As we pass through the green lanes of the area we will see a number of Neolithic monuments and listen to ancient tales. From the lakeside we follow the valley along the course of the River Slaney where Patrick landed.

Along the route take in Slieve Patrick, crowned by the largest statue of himself in the world. You will also have the chance to view one of his few relics of Saint Patrick, the altar stone which is shrouded with myth and legend. As we take a pew, you can see the beautiful glass artwork of Harry Clarke.

Completing the route the walk returns to Paddy's Barn for lunch. Situated in the shadow of Saul Church this is a traditional country pub.
