The North West Mountain Rescue Team, in co-operation with the National Trust, are organising a weekend of sponsored walks and activities on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 May in the hills around Belfast.

The Belfast Walking Festival will provide a planned, supervised opportunity to explore Black Hill, Black Mountain, and Divis Mountain plus Armstrong’s Hill while helping raise much-needed funds to support the work of Northern Ireland’s voluntary Mountain Rescue Service.

The North West Mountain Rescue Team has come up with a combination of walking-based activities to suit walkers of all ages, experience and stamina levels. The Belfast Four Peaks Challenge on Saturday 19 May is an all-day, 25 kilometer hike around all four hills. The Night Navigation Competition is a team event aimed at cadets, scouts and Duke of Edinburgh participants keen to pit their orienteering skills against other competing teams in a bid to score the highest number of points. The event takes place between 9.00pm on Saturday 19 and 1.00am Sunday 20 May, with an option to camp overnight on Divis Mountain.

The Family Treasure Hunt on Sunday 20 May starts at 11.00am at the National Trust Centre on Divis Mountain.  All groups will be issued with a quiz to guide them along the mountain route in a couple of hours while collecting answers to the clues. There will be goody bags and prizes for all entrants with no minimum age or evidence of family tie required to take part.

“The North West Mountain Rescue Team will be on hand at all three events to help and assist all participants,” explains Joe Dowdall, Team Leader. “We are aiming to raise £5000 in sponsorship this year to help fund the purchase and maintenance of essential rescue equipment.

In a busy year the Team can be called out up to fifty times to help find people who are lost or injured all over Northern Ireland. All members are volunteers and largely supply their own equipment, but the Team relies on public support to help run our all-terrain vehicles, to support training and to purchase the special equipment needed to help find and rescue people from remote locations in their hour of need.”
