You don’t have to go far to discover the beautiful scenery and exciting outdoor leisure activities Northern Ireland has to offer and now Venture Outdoors and OutdoorNI.com have launched  ‘Local Outdoors’, an online guide to discovering outdoor spaces to visit across the province.

Local Outdoors which sits within popular website OutdoorNI.com, is a one stop shop for discovering the many open spaces in Northern Ireland, containing detailed information on facilities and things to do in 85 open spaces.  It’s perfect for families or a group searching for a fun day in the outdoors and the good news is – there’s even more to come.   From the awe inspiring Marble Arch Caves Geopark in Fermanagh, to the kids’ playground at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park Belfast, you’re only a click away from discovering your next adventure in Northern Ireland’s outdoors by visiting www.outdoorni.com/local-outdoors

The walking, cycling and canoeing trails are taken from award winning websites WalkNI.com, CycleNI.com and CanoeNI.com.  The majority of the spaces featured in Local Outdoors offer recession friendly free parking and free admission – perfect for those on a budget!

The Venture Outdoors project has worked closely with 40 community groups across Northern Ireland to encourage them to take part in outdoors recreation which led to the team developing a ‘Group Leader Guide’ section within Local Outdoors.  The ‘Group Leader Guide’ contains a wealth of useful information and for anyone planning group outdoor activities.  Information in this section will assist a group leader in planning an outdoor activity, providing information on funding, transportation, insurance and first aid as well as offering downloadable toolkits also developed by the Venture Outdoors project.

In addition to places to visit and the group guide, the site also contains news, fun blogs and lists a number of activity clubs across the province that the public can join such as cycling, archery, walking, orienteering, climbing and canoeing clubs.  Speaking about the new portal Claire Overend Development Officer at Venture Outdoors commented “Local Outdoors is a great resource for families and anyone searching for a day out in NI.  The Group Leader Guide will be particularly useful for the community groups we have worked with when they are planning outdoor activities.  Local Outdoors showcases the fantastic, inexpensive outdoor spaces to visit which are on everyone’s doorstep – so there’s no excuse for not getting out and about”.

Local Outdoors was developed by the ‘Venture Outdoors – Creating Healthy Communities’ project, a 3 year initiative of Outdoor Recreation NI and has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities Programme and Ulster Garden Villages.
