The National Trust Have A Go Day

Do something out of the ordinary! If you fancy a challenge and something different, come along to Portstewart Strand on Sunday 17 May for the opportunity to try an exhilarating mix of outdoor activities. The National Trust ‘Have-a-Go' Day will be a fun packed family day out with the emphasis on fun, fun, fun!

The event is an opportunity for families of all ages to try canoeing, orienteering, surfing, archery, sea kayaking, climbing, blow-karting, and lots more! You can also take a leisurely walk around the sand dunes with one of the National Trust's knowledgeable guides and discover some of the rare species of flora and fauna, or have a go at sculpting sea creatures in the sand. All activities will be supervised by friendly, trained instructors.

The Strand is one of Ireland's finest and most popular beaches - a two-mile expanse of fine golden sands facing the North Atlantic Ocean and Donegal Hills beyond. Management of this site, now part of the Bann Estuary Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), involves a sustainable approach of conservation measures to protect the beach and dune system, as well as allowing sustainable access and the pursuit of varied leisure and recreational activities. In fact, 16 different recreational activities have been recorded at Portstewart Strand and many of these will be available to visitors on Sunday 17 May.

Key recreational exhibitors will be on hand to give advice, including the Countryside, Access & Activities Network (CAAN), NI Kite Forum, Aquaholics, Northern Ireland Orienteering, PSNI and the Coastguard. Take time out to browse around the National Trust shop, enjoy a hot drink and a tasty tray bake or treat yourself to pig on a spit or a dinky donut.

Whether you want to warm up, cool off, or chill out, the National Trust ‘Have-a-go' Day will have something for you. As Northern Ireland's largest conservation charity, the National Trust cares for 120 miles of coastline and over 40 square miles of scenic countryside. The variety of natural landscapes offers superb opportunities to get out and about and try out a host of outdoor activities.

So why not come and have a go, you never know where it will lead you!

Enjoy a day for all the family from 11:00am to 5pm on Sunday 17 May 2009.

Be active - be healthy!
