Dame Mary Peters, famed for her Olympic success, joined local school children to launch Get Outdoors Weekend which takes place on 21 & 22 September.

Get Outdoors Weekend is set to attract over 4000 people across Northern Ireland to take part in one of over 70 free outdoor activity events on offer.

Families, friends and couples can try their hand with expert guidance at canoeing, mountain biking or archery, all for free with no prior experience needed.  For the less adventurous, there are just as many events on offer including guided walks spotting red squirrels, bushcraft, cycling or reaching the peaks of the Belfast Hills.

Dame Mary is a great lover of the outdoors and her enthusiasm for keeping active outdoors has never waned.

Dame Mary Peters commented, “I am thrilled to be the ambassador for Get Outdoors Weekend.  Keeping active should be an important part of our everyday life.  I would really encourage people to have a look at what activities are on offer over the weekend and plan your adventure.   All the events are free of charge, so there are no excuses!”

She continued, “I enjoyed family outings into the outdoors as a child.   We were always doing active things and I always tried to beat my brother!  And who knows how good you are at something until you try it!”

In particular families are well catered for with 6 family activity days full of outdoor activities, such as treasure trails & horse riding as well as fun activities including balloon making and arts & crafts.

Aideen Exley, Marketing Manager of Outdoor Recreation NI enthused, “The Get Outdoors Weekend is all about being active whilst having fun, getting reconnected to nature, and re-discovering local green spaces.  It’s also an opportunity to visit somewhere new in Northern Ireland and enjoy a short break.”

Asda are the sponsors for Get Outdoors Weekend, and General Store Manager, Steven Henry, from Asda commented, “We’re delighted to lend our support to the 2013 Get Outdoors Weekend. As part of our Community Life initiative, Asda is dedicated to finding new and exciting ways to encourage our local communities to think about their health and wellbeing.”

Many events must be pre-booked in advance and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.    For more information and to book your place, go to www.GetOutdoorsWeekend.com
