Causeway Coast Way

Between Portstewart and the mouth of the River Bann lies the golden sands and domineering sand dunes of National Trust owned Portrush Strand Beach, which holds the Blue Flag award for the management, cleanliness and quality of water, activities to partake in include, surfing, swimming, horse riding.

Ballycastle is a town with great character and innate beauty this is due to many of the shops having kept their traditional frontages. Ballycastle is also known for the world famous Oul Lammas fair which is held on the last Monday and Tuesday of August.

Ballycastle boasts a golf course, tranquil forest, pretty beach and provides the ferry service to Rathlin Island. Nightlife is catered by the local pubs who provide traditional music. Accommodation ranges from camping to hotels.

Built on a peninsula, Portrush commands excellent views to Donegal, Dunluce Castle and the Giants Causeway headland along with 2 very good beaches, where local surf schools hold lessons. Within the town you will find a selection of indoor venues which include, Waterworld, The Dunluce Centre, The Coastal Zone, ‘Barry’s Amusements’ along with an excellent selection of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Portrush also hosts a large harbour and is home to the local Lifeboat station. A 3km stroll along the East Strand will bring you to the spectacular white rocks, where you can continue to walk along the footpath to Dunluce Castle. Portrush offers a wide range of accommodation from hostels to hotels along with camping facilities.

The Giants Causeway is one of Northern Irelands most visited tourist attractions. The Causeway was formed due to intense volcanic activity 60 million years ago, out of the three periods of volcanic activity which resulted in lava flows, known as Basalts.

It is the Middle Basalts rocks which form the columns of the Giants Causeway. The rapidly cooling lava contracted and variations in the cooling rate resulted in the world famous columnar structure.

There are also many legends surrounding the Causeway the most famous is that of Finn McCool and who built a path across the sea from County Antrim to his Scottish rival Benandonner’s lair, to settle their dispute over which giant was the strongest once and for all. Finn was much smaller and outwitted the Scottish Giant by pretending to be his own baby, therefore scaring Benandonner who wondered how big Finn was, Benandonner ran away and ripped up the causeway as he fled.
