Ulster Way

Sliabh Beagh Way

The Sliabh Beagh Way passes through some of the most remote parts of the Ulster countryside as it follows a meandering 40-mile course across the backbone of the Sliabh Beagh hills. Along the way it offers walkers plenty of historical richness, potential wildlife sightings and far-reaching views from the higher ground.

Carn Rock is the legendary burial place of Bith from whom Sliabh Beagh takes its name. Unfortunately, the cairn no longer remains intact due to quarrying in the last centuary.

The hills in the area are mostly sandstone and were formed over 350 million years ago when sand depoisted in this area by a river delta was compacted and hardened into rock.

The view from the summit is breath taking and extends south over the drumlin countryside of County Monaghan. To the east, the outline of Slieve Gullion can be seen and on a clear day Slieve Rushen and the high ground of Cuilcagh are visibile to the west.

Surrounded by magnificent woodland this stunning attraction gained its name from St Patrick who reputedly passed this way on his way through Clogher.

Tradition has it that he said mass at the rock while sitting on the chair and blessed the well, thereby bestowing powerful healing cures on its water.

The association between trees and well is celebrated in many ways such as attaching pieces of material to a 'rag tree' beside the well in a prayer for healing.

These trees are not the same as those in the surrounding forest but are the smaller native species that have stood here long before the modern planting began.

Aughnacloy (from the Irish: Achadh na Cloiche meaning "Field of the stone") is a hamlet in County Tyrone.

Aughnacloy stands on the national border with County Monaghan. The exceptionally wide main street makes it an ideal location for an open market held every first and third Wednesday of the month.

Buildings of interest are the handsome parish church built in 1763, the gabled almshouses and the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary with its unusual tall tower topped by a cupola.

Aughnacloy offers excellent fishing and for those interested in old railways - the station house, which was once the headquarters of the former Clogher Valley Railway, is still standing

Lisnaskea is County Fermanagh's second town, The town is built around the long main street, which bends at almost 90 degrees along its course.

The town has a strong heritage in the production of sandstone and limestone, which can be witnessed in much of building in the area. However, it is largely an agricultural area. Just off the Main Street can be found the ruins of Castle Balfour, built in 1618 by the Balfour’s. The castle was inhabited right up to the early 19th Century and is currently undergoing a restoration programme.

Lisnaskea has a host of shops, pubs and cafes.
