Poets Trail - The Creggan Loop

The Creggan Loop starts at the fascinating Creggan Parish Church and Graveyard, one of the most important in Ulster, it is the burial place of three 18th Century Gaelic poets and home of the famous O'Neill Vault. There is also a picturesque area adjacent to the Graveyard known as 'Poets Glen'.

Route Description

Park at lay-by beside the church and proceed to start of the walk at Creggan Parish Church, Creggan (1). Continue along the Glassdrummond Road for approximately 2 3/4 miles and take the first right past Glassdrummond Lake (2) on to Leeter Road.

Continue for approximately 1/2 mile and take the first turning left onto Mounthill Road, then continue for approximately 1 1/4 miles note you will see Roches Castle (3) to your left hand side before the crossroads. Turn left at the Crossroads and continue for approximately 3/4 mile before turning left.

Then continue for another 3/4 mile and veer right through Ballsmill Village (4) past Ballsmill Amenity Site. Continue for approximately 1 mile and take the first turning to the left, Cortreasla Road. Continue and keep left along Cortleasla Road (5).

After 1 mile turn right onto Lurgan Road, and continue for approximately 1 1/4 miles, past Redfellas pub on the left and take the first turn to the left at Murray's Road. Continue for approximately 1/2 mile taking the first turn to the right, Cregganbane Road, and at the junction turn left always following the way markers. At the bottom of the road turn right back to Creggan Church.

Getting to the Start (by Car)

Follow signs out of Newry for Camlough, then follow signs for Crossmaglen. Continue towards Crossmaglen until you reach a sign for Creggan. Turn left and continue for approximately 250 yards until you reach Creeggan Parish Church on right hand side. Bus service 42 & 42A from Newry to Crossmaglen.

Beautiful countryside and a really interesting historial background but in no way could the roads be described as 'quiet'. Most were plagued by large heavy lorries (and this was a Saturday) and many cars. However the scenery somewhat made up for constantly having to shout 'car'!
