Route Description

Part of the new Castlewellan Walking Trails launched in November 2014, this trail is signposted from the Lakeside car park - follow the green waymarkers.  This is also the Green / Easy mountain bike trail.

This relatively flat trail leads around Castlewellan Lake, a natural lake extended by the Annesley family early in the 19th centuary.  With excellent views across the lake and the surrounding woodland the trail passes close to the Ice House and the iconic Castle built in 1856.

This is an 'Easy' walk suitable for most people in good health including those with limited mobility and some buggies.  Surfaces are even and consistent throughout. The gradient is relatively flat.

This walk is situated in a working forest environment and may be subject to diversion and closure from time to time.

Up to date information is available on the Forest Service web site - link below.

i came back from castlewellan forest park yesterday and i had a wonderful time. i went on the walk around the lake about 4 times in 2 days. i went on the blue trail about 4 times and the red trail once. the lake is lovely and young children like me would love it(unless they are lazy!!!) I would highly recommend castlewellan as I stayed in the caravan site. the wildlife is beautiful and you can do lots of activities. I went canoeing and it was great. young children would love it and you can either have a instructed session for 1.5 hours or you can hire a canoe out for half a day or a full day!! It is great fun and there is even a wee cafe to go in and have some peace and quiet. GO THERE!

We went here last week with our mummy and daddy and our dog Odie. We had a nice walk around the lake and up to cyprus pond. At the end of the big lake we fed the ducks then we went and had our picnic lunch. A SUPER PLACE
