Poets Trail: Ballykeel Loop

The route leaves Ti Chulainn Cultural Centre, Mullaghbane and follows country lanes visiting points of interest including the birth place of the poet and scribe Art Bennett, the last working flax mill in the area, Mullach Bán Folk Museum before returning to the starting point.  NB Walkers should be careful on any of the larger roads connecting the smaller ones.

Route Description

Turn right when leaving the Ti Chulainn Centre on to Bog Road and continue to the end. Turn left and left again on to Mill Road past the birth place of the Poet Art Bennett and the last working flax mill in the area. At the end of Mill Road go straight across the B30 on to Mullaghan's Road. Continue turning left to Cowans Road.

Follow the road to the junction with the B30 at Mullach Ban Folk Museum. Cross the B30 to the end of the Old Road turning left along Tullymacrieve Road. Continue until Ballinaseck bridge. Turn right on to Ballinaseck Road. Continue left to Cashel Road and left again on to Cnoc an Damhsa Road. Continue to the junction with Cranny Road. Turn left on to Lough Road, passing Cloverhill Golf Course. Turn left at the junction with Glendesha Road.

Continue along to the junction with Upper Road. Turn left and left again on to Forkhill Road. Walk in to Mullaghbane Village and turn right on to Maphoner Road and the Ti Chulainn Centre.

I attempted this walk today. Made it as far as Ballykeel Dolmen and got lost! The actual route isn't well signposted and the couple of people I asked didn't know the route. So I ended up taking a bit of a detour and coming back along the main road. There are worse places to get lost though. Beautiful countryside to look at all around.
